Comparing and Contrasting Cat and John Deere

Both Caterpillar, more commonly referred to as Cat, and John Deere provide a wide selection of machinery. They are both widely known in construction and farming. However, while they may have some similarities; they also have their differences as well.

Cat Construction

Caterpillar originated in the year 1904 when the founder of Cat, Benjamin Holt, successfully came out with an improved version of the steam tractor. The company photographer, Charles Clements, observed that it “crawled like a caterpillar.” Thus, Holt decided on the name Caterpillar.

John Deere has been around much longer with its founding in the year 1837. The company was founded by a man by the name of John Deere. He developed and manufactured the first successful cast-steel plow, which was the start of Deere & Company.

Today Caterpillar has an abundance of products and machinery for use in farming, construction, mining, forestry, transportation, and other industries. There are about four-hundred different products to choose from. Some of these products include tractors, excavators, backhoes, motor graders, off-highway trucks, wheel loaders, agricultural tractors, and more.

While John Deere offers many of the same or similar products as Caterpillar, John Deere primarily offers tractors. John Deere’s products may be used for many of the same uses as the Caterpillar products, but are most commonly used in the farming industry. However, even while only primarily offering tractors, John Deere has quite the long list of tractors in which they offer. This list includes, but is not limited to the 48-HP 4700, 40-HP 990 Advantage Series, 5005 Advantage Series, and many more.

In conclusion, there are many similarities as well as differences between the two companies. While Caterpillar hasn’t been around as long, they offer a wider range of products for several different uses. However, even with John Deere not offering as much of a variety in machinery as Caterpillar they still have quite the long list of tractors offered.
